Just came across this story on the Guardian website which is eye-opening and illustrative of the complications of our globalised world.
‘The exploitation of tens of thousands of migrants used to grow salad vegetables for British supermarkets has been uncovered by a Guardian investigation into the €2bn-a-year (£1.6bn) hothouse industry in southern Spain.’
Watching the video of Felicity Lawerence’s investigation the words of the migrant activist strike me the most: ‘People just don’t want to hear. Everyone knows this system exists. It’s slavery in Europe.’
The image I found was not related to the article but it does put an ironic spin on your ‘5 a day’ and the ‘5 a day’ of the people that pick your veg for you.
